One of the great things about the holidays is that they are full of potential to create memories that last a lifetime. Whether you have a traditional or a non-traditional family, you can create a lasting memory by putting on your own series of Christmas shows.

When creating the format for the first of your series of Christmas shows, consider elements that have special meaning to the family members. If your family is active in a particular faith, you may want to focus on the religious aspects of the holiday. Prepare scenes and select music that helps to tell the traditional Christmas story. Interwoven in the scenes could be music that helps move the story from one scene to the next. As an example, you could preface a scene showing Joseph and Mary traveling to Bethlehem with a traditional folk standard, such as the Cherry Tree Song. Allow the actors to follow along with the lyrics as Mary asks Joseph to pluck a cherry for her, because she is carrying a child. Continue on to Joseph's anger and then finally to the branches of the cherry tree descending to Mary's hand so she may pluck a cherry for herself.

If your family is more focused on the jolly adventures of Santa, then use that idea as the inspiration for your Christmas shows. Perhaps there are some hilarious stories among the family members of the first time they ever visited a department store and sat on Santa's knee. Music could again be used to progress from one story to another, either by the family members joining together to sing along with recorded music or acapella.

Perhaps your Christmas shows could be more along the lines of a fashion show. Have each person dress up as their favorite Christmas related character and participate in some of the trappings used in a contest, such as a talent portion, an interview portion, and a big grand finale.

Christmas shows do not have to be serious undertakings and in the close circle of the family, you can be as silly as you like. The point is not to prepare Christmas shows that are ready to go on tour, but productions that will be remembered with laughter and smiles in the years to come.
